So, you want to have a birthday party ...
I missed this surreal moment of the day, but I thought this story was a little off the wall.
A large group of parents and children walked into our library and asked if they could hold a birthday party at our library. Immediately.
Oh, they brought all their own decorations, presents, and a cake.
Our answer: "Um, no. I'm afraid not."
Mother of birthday child: "Why not? See? *displays cake to child* See your cake sweetie? It has raspberry filling!"
Our answer: "We don't allow food or drink in the library. So, you'll need to take the cake outside."
The frustrated mother explained that the place they were going to hold the party was closed for the night. Finally, frustrated mother exited the building with the cake, and the party filtered upstairs to the children's area of the library. We're monitoring the situation closely.
Seriously, there are two restaurants open down the street which would probably give space to accommodate a little girl's birthday party. I normally wouldn't be too critical, but frustrated mother added that the party had already driven to a neighboring library earlier and had been given the same "No food or drink in the library" answer.
I know the library is famous for being a kid and clown friendly atmosphere, but I have to draw the line at Bring-Your-Own-Cake catering.
